HERE IS NEW YORK

Here is New York (Ed.)

FIVE YEARS OF HERE IS NEW YORK

”Many years ago, well before 9-11 I worked in the Merrill Lynch building, one block away from the World Trade Center. I knew those downtown streets like the back of my hand. I have relocated to Virginia Beach and have lived here for 19 years and I cried when I saw the book. I speak of NYC to my two boys as if I still live there. In fact, in September 2000, we were on the top floor of the World Trade Center to show my children the wonder of those towers. To me, and many others, we feel the "people" and I say that gritting my teeth, who did this not only to New Yorkers but to the world couldn't have done worse if they blew up our individual homes. This book is a book of hope, a book that brings out the best in people, a book that shows that many of the sterotypical ideas of New Yorkers are not true. It shows a horrific event and how a city came together to help each other. Yes, there are very graphic images, and yes, it makes us cry, but it's no less a part of history than the Holocaust was, or genocide that maniacs in other countries commit. We can't shield our children forever, life is not hearts and flowers, but this book shows history, it shows the human spirit and it shows how a city pulled together.”
Sharon Stakofsky-Davis, Virginia Beach, VA

"This book is stunning in the literal not the sensationalistic sense of the word... If you don't want to remember, don't pick up this book. I'd argue, however, that for the sake of our children and our society, we all need to remember this event and remember it well.”
Robert Stribley on Amazon.com

"If you buy any September 11 book, this should be it. No words, all pictures, and they tell the complete story. A book to keep as a part of history and to show your grandchildren decades from now.”
mrgoodlite, Reisterstown, MD, on Amazon.com

Here is New York was founded in response to the events of September 11, and to the flood of images that resulted from it. The idea was simple: to present images of the event by as many different people and from as many different perspectives as possible. In the days following September 11, the organisers asked for pictures and were inundated with slides, negatives, prints, and digital files from photographers of every description, not only top photojournalists and other professionals, but rescue workers, firemen, cops, school children, and amateurs of every kind. In order to underline that it was the images themselves that mattered, rather than their makers, the photographs were all digitally scanned, printed out in exactly the same format, and hung from wires without attribution nor frames in a Prince St. store front. The book Here is New York is the most comprehensive and authentic document of what occurred. It bears witness to what seemed unimaginable and memorializes the people who perished and the rescue workers who served so courageously. Most of all, the book is a testimony of people speaking directly to each other about their fears, their emotions, and their desire for community. This desire is one of the strongest by-products of the horrible events of September 11. It is also what distinguishes Here is New York from any and all other books about the event.
